So you’ve drafted some OKRs with your team and you’re eager to start checking in and bringing them to life. Awesome! But wait – before you start checking in, it’s critical to look outside the team to align those OKRs horizontally with other teams and vertically through layers of leadership – identifying dependencies and negotiating precise, shared outcomes along the way.
Perhaps you used an online or physical whiteboard or other tool to help brainstorm and solidify your OKRs. Now it’s time to move them into a clear, legible, public document where everyone can advocate for, and negotiate with each other to continue refining the OKRs.
A template like this one allows you to put all the teams’ draft OKRs in a single scrollable view that doesn’t require any clicking or navigation. This makes it easier and more likely that team members will read, consider, and discuss their OKRs together.
Most online productivity tools allow you to add comments directly to a document and tag & notify colleagues about questions or challenges. You can propose or even make changes directly in the document so that everyone can easily see the latest updates.
Ready for a deeper dialogue?
Consider holding an OKR Festival or a gallery walk to openly align OKRs in realtime. Don’t be shy about approaching a team member directly to talk about their OKRs. Remember: the conversations we have about OKRs are often more valuable than the OKRs themselves!
This template is deliberately basic to make it easy to move items between categories (e.g. turning a health metric into a key result or a key result into an activity) to find the best possible expression of your goals.
